Share

An Event Hosted by Soroptimist of Borrego Springs

On January 28, the Borrego Springs High School Community Room was filled for a community screening of The Journey, a documentary centered on survivor-led stories of human trafficking. Men and women from across Borrego Springs attended, creating space for learning, reflection, and open conversation.

Presented by DOC Land Films, The Journey follows the lived experiences of three survivors and focuses on recovery, personal strength, and the realities surrounding human trafficking. The film offered a clear, human-centered perspective designed to inform and educate without sensationalizing the subject.

Program and Community Conversation

Introductions and program context were provided by Amanda Schneider of Amplify Voices, helping frame the importance of survivor-led storytelling and community awareness. Following the screening, the room remained engaged for a thoughtful question-and-answer session.

The discussion and Q&A were led by Keelin Washington, Senior Director of Programs at GenerateHope, a San Diego–based nonprofit organization that provides long-term, restorative housing and trauma-informed care for survivors of sex trafficking. Attendees asked informed questions and shared reflections, leading to meaningful dialogue about prevention, awareness, and how communities can respond.

Community Support and Impact

The screening was hosted by the Soroptimist of Borrego Springs in partnership with Borrego Springs High School. Providing opportunities for education, discussion, and awareness is part of the broader community-focused work Soroptimist of Borrego Springs brings to the area, addressing issues that affect women, girls, and families.

The evening underscored the value of creating local spaces where difficult topics can be addressed respectfully, with time to listen, ask questions, and continue conversations before and after the formal program.

January is designated as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month in the United States, dedicated to raising awareness, educating the public, and strengthening efforts to combat sex and labor trafficking. Throughout the month, government agencies, advocates, and communities focus on identifying signs, supporting survivors, and promoting prevention.
