Borrego Springs Resident Spotlight: Esmeralda Lopez-Garcia

Some people become part of a community by holding a title. Esmeralda Lopez-Garcia has become part of Borrego Springs by simply showing up — for her family, her neighbors, local students and people who need a little help finding their way through something difficult.

Being around Esmeralda feels a little like being at home. She has a warmth that makes people feel comfortable, but behind her soft-spoken nature is a strong will, a sharp mind and a determination to get things done.

Esmeralda is a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and community leader. She was born in Los Angeles, but Borrego Springs is home. Her family settled here in 1979, and she grew up surrounded by relatives whose lives and work became part of the valley.

“Everything that identifies me is Borrego Springs,” Esmeralda said during an interview on Ram Radio’s Moments with MJ.

Her instinct to help others started early. Esmeralda remembers translating for her mother when she was about six years old. By 11, she was helping her understand bills, write checks and work through paperwork. As she grew older, other people began turning to her for help too.

Today, Esmeralda is a notary and continues to help Borrego residents when paperwork, applications or unfamiliar processes become overwhelming. She is the kind of person who can look at something complicated, break it down and find a way through it.

I experienced that firsthand while planning last year’s Una Noche Mexicana. Another OLAX member and I were going over event numbers, and the later it got, the more confused we became.

Esmeralda remained completely calm.

“Don’t worry, girls. I planned for this. It’s fine. The numbers will work out,” she told us.

And they did.

That moment says a lot about Esmeralda. While the rest of us may still be trying to understand the problem, she is often already several steps ahead, thinking through the possibilities and making sure there is a plan.

Her sharp mind is matched by an equally generous heart.

During her Ram Radio interview, Esmeralda shared the story of a couple who were unsure how to navigate the process of getting their marriage license. She helped them understand what they needed to do, complete the process and make their appointment.

When they asked what they owed her, she told them nothing.

“It cost me nothing but a little bit of time,” she said.

That outlook comes in large part from her father, known throughout Borrego as Don Lupe.

Esmeralda said he raised his five children with a simple lesson: if you can help, help.

“It doesn’t cost you anything to help,” she remembers him saying.

He also taught them not to give up easily.

“There’s no worse fight than the one that isn’t fought.”

Those lessons became especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Esmeralda saw local families suddenly without paychecks and struggling to navigate unemployment, EBT and other emergency resources. Language barriers and complicated systems made an already difficult time even harder.

In one case, a local worker had paid an outside business for help filing for unemployment, but important notices were not reaching him because the business had used its own contact information on the claim.

Esmeralda spent months helping him work through the problem and ultimately helped recover $18,000 in benefits.

Experiences like that helped lead to the creation of Organización Latinx de Borrego Springs (OLAX).

Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, OLAX began as an effort to bridge communication and language gaps and help local families connect with information and resources. Esmeralda was among its founders.

Since then, OLAX has grown into a community nonprofit dedicated to celebrating culture, supporting local families and creating educational opportunities. Its work includes scholarships and year-round programming, along with events such as Día de Los Muertos, Una Noche Mexicana, Santa en el Círculo and Cinco de Mami.

For Esmeralda, those gatherings are about more than putting on an event. They are a way to celebrate families, share culture and recognize the generations of people who have helped shape Borrego Springs.

“What started as just sending out a helping hand has grown into a total embrace,” she said of OLAX.

Esmeralda’s own family history runs deep in the valley. During her Ram Radio interview, she spoke about relatives whose work helped build and sustain parts of Borrego Springs. An uncle installed water and sewer lines at Rams Hill. Other family members worked at The Palms at Indian Head, Palm Canyon Resort, in agriculture and in businesses throughout the community.

Esmeralda has built her own life of service here as well. She has worked for the Borrego Water District for more than a decade while continuing to give her time to local families, students and community efforts.

But her story is not really about titles or organizations.

It is about the way she shows up.

It may be helping someone understand a confusing letter, encouraging a student, supporting a friend or helping a family figure out what to do next. Sometimes the most important thing she offers is simply the reassurance that a problem can be solved.

That is part of why being around Esmeralda feels like being at home. You can laugh with her, lean on her and trust that when she says, “Don’t worry, I planned for this,” there is a very good chance she has.

At the center of everything is her family. Esmeralda and her husband, Octavio, have raised their daughters, Mia and Maria, in the same community where she grew up.

After spending several years away from Borrego Springs, Esmeralda said she and Octavio knew this was where they wanted to raise their family.

One of her favorite memories is walking her daughters into the same preschool she attended as a child.

“We really are back,” she remembered thinking. “I’m gonna make this our home.”

And she has.

Esmeralda does not need to be the loudest person in the room to lead. Her strength is quieter than that. It is in her determination, her ability to solve problems, the way she brings people together and her willingness to keep showing up when someone needs her.

Her mind is one of her greatest gifts, and her heart is equally so.

At the end of her Ram Radio interview, Esmeralda shared a simple message that also describes the way she has lived her life:

“Pay it forward.”

“Share a little something with someone,” she said, “because it makes a difference.”

In Borrego Springs, Esmeralda Lopez-Garcia has been doing exactly that for years.
