Sylvia Maas’ NorthCape–Tarifa Ride Ends in Injury, But Her Mission for Borrego Students Continues

Sylvia Maas’ nearly 7,000-kilometer ride from Norway to Spain ended after a serious knee injury during the NorthCape–Tarifa adventure.

After a serious knee injury during her nearly 7,000-kilometer ride from Norway to Spain, Maas is asking the community to keep supporting Bike4BorregoKids.

Borrego Springs ultra-endurance cyclist Sylvia Maas began the NorthCape–Tarifa ride on June 20, 2026, taking on a nearly 7,000-kilometer self-supported bicycle adventure from Norway to Spain.

The ride was more than a personal challenge. Maas was riding for Bike4BorregoKids, the initiative she founded to support Borrego Springs students through scholarships, mentorship, leadership development and educational opportunities.

For days, followers watched Sylvia travel through Europe, sharing photos from the road, updates from checkpoints and moments of encouragement from fellow riders. She was one of five Americans taking part in the adventure.

But this week, Maas’ ride came to a sudden and painful end after a serious fall. She shared that she detached her quadriceps from her knee and is returning to San Diego, where she will likely undergo surgery. Recovery could take more than a year.

“This experience has been trying at best, but I will continue to push on and hope to be back on my bike sooner than later,” Maas shared. “I will be back. Head up and smile.”

Though her ride has ended, the mission behind it continues.

Bike4BorregoKids raises funds to provide scholarships and mentorship for local teens, helping them access education and build brighter futures. In the past two years alone, the program has awarded more than $57,500 in scholarships to Borrego Springs High School seniors, including $30,000 in 2025 and $27,500 in 2026.

The fundraiser also supports academic mentorship, tutoring, college applications, scholarship essays, student leadership, community service, and educational excursions beyond Borrego Springs.

As Sylvia begins her recovery, the community can help carry the mission forward.

Donations to Bike4BorregoKids directly support Borrego Springs students and help continue the work Sylvia was riding for.

Power Outages in Borrego Springs If you live in Borrego Springs, power outages are part of desert life. The electricity goes out, everything suddenly gets quiet, and the waiting begins. Borrego Springs resident and writer Shannon Cheesman , creator of Under the Borrego Sky , recently shared a video showing what one of these outages looks like from a local perspective. When the Power Goes Out Power outages can be especially noticeable in Borrego Springs, where air conditioning and other cooling systems are important during the warmer months. In her video, Shannon takes viewers along during an outage at her home, capturing the sudden quiet and uncertainty that comes with not knowing how long the electricity will be off. It is a simple look at an experience many year-round residents recognize. Managing Electricity in the Desert In a previous Under the Borrego Sky video, Shannon also shared how her household manages summer electric costs. Her strategies include using paid-off solar panels, avoiding laundry during peak hours, raising the thermostat while away, alternating between central air and a swamp cooler, and making monthly payments toward the household’s annual SDG&E bill. Together, the videos offer a practical look at two realities of living in the desert: managing the cost of keeping a home cool and being prepared for times when the power goes out. Under the Borrego Sky Under the Borrego Sky is Shannon Cheesman’s personal chronicle of life in Borrego Springs, California. Her videos feature seasonal nature reports, local discoveries, and everyday experiences filmed in and around Borrego Springs. Sometimes that means spectacular desert scenery. Other times, it is simply waiting for the power to come back on. Subscribe on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@under-the-borrego-sky Read more from Under the Borrego Sky, at: www.undertheborregosky.com
