Share

Military Wash is well worth exploring for its mix of history, geology, and peaceful desert beauty. During World War II, it was used as a military training ground, and visitors today can still find remnants of that history, such as spent shell casings and abandoned equipment.
To get to Military Wash from San Diego:
- Take Route 78 east from San Diego. After about an hour and a half, you’ll reach the town of Julian.
- Continue east on Route 78 for about 1.3 miles until you reach the turnoff for Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
- Turn onto Buttes Pass Road (this is an unpaved jeep trail, so proceed with caution).
- Once on Buttes Pass Road, continue driving north. The road may be rugged, so a high-clearance vehicle is recommended.
- At the first crossing, turn right and continue past Goat Canyon and Hawk Canyon.
- When you reach the San Felipe Wash, turn right (southeast) and follow the wash down to reach Military Wash.

When you arrive at Military Wash, you’ll find a variety of desert plants and wildlife, including cactus and jackrabbits. Several hiking trails in the area range from easy walks to more challenging routes, offering something for all skill levels.
One of the unique features of Military Wash is its history as a World War II military training ground. You can still see evidence of this in the form of abandoned tanks, jeeps, and other military equipment.

In addition to military artifacts, visitors to Military Wash might find abandoned items such as old cars and bottles scattered throughout the area. While some people find these items add character, others may view them as remnants of the past.
Despite the presence of abandoned items, Military Wash is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. The desert landscape is stunning, and you’ll have the chance to see a wide variety of desert plants and wildlife.
Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Military Wash is a destination worth exploring. Be sure to pack your camera and enjoy this unique desert oasis.
