Vacation Bible School Offers Summer Program for Kids of All Ages
Camp Firelight returned to Borrego Methodist Church after 14 years, offering Bible stories, science, crafts, and fun for local children of all ages.
Borrego Springs Community United Methodist Church hosted its 2025 Vacation Bible School (VBS) from June 23–26, welcoming children of all ages to a free, four-day summer program themed Camp Firelight. Held for the first time in 14 years, the program offered Bible-based learning, science activities, crafts, games, and music in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
Each day ran from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at 633 Church Lane, with lunch and snacks provided. Campers rotated through a schedule that included Bible storytelling, sign language, science experiments, and hands-on crafts. The sanctuary was transformed into a colorful indoor “camp” with a large tent, themed decorations, and a symbolic campfire. Leaders Mrs. Rue and Lumi the Lightbug helped bring the curriculum to life.
Throughout the week, activities included:
- Crafting picture frames and bracelets
- Investigating the science of bubbles and learning about buoyancy by building paper boats
- Learning sign language with Bible verses
- Participating in Bible story lessons focused on trust and teamwork
A highlight of Day 3 was a visit from California State Park Interpreters and Peace Officer Carina, who brought the world of local nature and conservation to life in an interactive session.
A highlight of Day 3 was a visit from California State Park Interpreters and Peace Officer Carina, who brought hands-on learning to life. Campers asked questions, explored displays, examined owl pellets, and deepened their curiosity about the desert environment around them.
The final day concluded with a closing assembly, outdoor water games, and a festive meal of pizza, watermelon, and ice pops. Each day offered hands-on learning, creative activities, and high energy from campers and everyone involved.
This VBS program was made possible through the efforts of volunteers, community members, and generous donors. No membership was required, and all children were welcome to attend at no cost—a gift of hospitality and care from the church to the wider Borrego Springs community.
Pastor Mateo Mamea, along with the congregation, continues to support the development of children’s programming at the church. Additional youth activities are expected in the coming months.
