Borrego Ministers Association Receives $35,000 BVEF Grant
The Borrego Ministers Association (BMA) has received a $35,000 grant from the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund
(BVEF) to support its food coupon program in 2026, a key effort addressing food insecurity in Borrego Springs.
The grant was presented at the BVEF Grant Awards Luncheon on March 18, 2026.
BMA Treasurer Karan K. Kyzer accepted the grant on behalf of the organization, with BMA Director, Fr. David Madsen of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church also in attendance, as the grant was presented by Anna Abatzoglou, Executive Director of the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund, and David Garmon, president of the BVEF board.
A Network Built on Community Support
In a statement, BMA Co-Chair Fr. Michael Plekon described Borrego Springs as a place where organizations, though diverse in mission and structure, are united by a shared commitment to helping neighbors in need.
He identified BVEF as a leading force in supporting the well-being of Borrego residents, particularly through investments in healthcare and community programs, including support for Borrego Health and local nonprofits serving youth and education.
Nearly 15 Years of Service
For nearly 15 years, Borrego’s faith communities have worked together through the Borrego Ministers Association. Originally brought together by the Revs. Laura Brecht and James Brooking, BMA created a coordinated network of clergy and volunteers to respond to local needs.
That support includes temporary help with utilities, rent, transportation for medical appointments, auto repair, and air conditioner loans during extreme summer heat.
Addressing Food Insecurity
During the COVID period, BMA expanded its work to respond to growing food insecurity in the Borrego Valley. The organization began providing food coupons for Center Market and Desert Pantry, helping residents access groceries when they need them most.
A local store owner has also matched BMA coupon purchases, increasing the impact of the program. In 2025, BMA purchased and distributed more than $140,000 in food coupons.
Impact of the 2026 Grant
The newly awarded $35,000 grant will help sustain the food coupon program in 2026.
According to Plekon, the funding will play an important role in easing food insecurity in Borrego Springs, alongside multiple food banks operating monthly. The grant reflects continued collaboration between BVEF and local organizations working to meet essential needs across the community.
