A Legacy for Borrego — Celebrating the Wermers’ Impact

Residents, community leaders, and local partners gathered on Saturday, November 15, to recognize Jim and Anne Wermers and the lasting impact of their 2023 donation of The Center to the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund (BVEF). This blog highlights the event, the unveiling of the commemorative plaque, and the introduction of BVEF’s new Community Endowment, which expands support for programs benefiting Borrego Springs.

Gathering at The Center

A brief break in the rain allowed attendees to gather inside the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center (BSPAC) lobby and outside along the covered walkway. Despite the weather, the turnout was strong, underscoring the importance of this moment for Borrego Springs.

The celebration marked two years since the Wermers donated The Center to BVEF—a landmark contribution that continues to serve as a foundation for long-term community investment.

Food, Music, and Community

A buffet catered by Pablito’s provided freshly prepared dishes throughout the afternoon, paired with a margarita bar for guests. Entertainment was provided by Grammy-nominated guitarist Luis Villegas, presented by Option B Entertainment. His blend of flamenco, jazz, and new-age music created a warm atmosphere despite the rainy day.

Plaque Unveiling and Remarks

When the rain lifted, guests gathered near the BSPAC entrance for the plaque unveiling.

Miss Borrego and the Borrego Springs Princesses carried out the official unveiling as attendees watched from both inside and outside the building.

The presentation was delivered by BVEF President Dr. David Garmon, who reflected on the significance of the Wermers’ contribution:

“Exactly two years ago today, Jim and Anne Wermers gifted The Center to the Borrego Valley Endowment Fund to hold and operate in perpetuity for the benefit of the Borrego Springs community. Jim and Anne’s gift forms the cornerstone of a new Community Endowment that will allow the BVEF to grow beyond its traditional focus on healthcare to provide a broader range of enduring social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits.”

A New Community Endowment

The donation of The Center has allowed BVEF to expand its mission.
This includes the launch of a
new Community Endowment, designed to strengthen long-term support for programs across the Borrego Valley.

The Center now serves as home to initiatives like the Frugal Coyote Thrift Store, whose proceeds help fund community-focused programs, including the Teachers Fund supporting classrooms in Borrego Springs.

A Gift With Lasting Impact

The Wermers’ contribution remains one of the most transformative gifts in Borrego Springs history. Their donation continues to support local initiatives while laying the groundwork for future programs that will serve residents, families, and community partners for years to come.
