County Closes Several Parks as Extreme Heat Grips the Region

Park closures highlight growing heat dangers as Borrego Springs temperatures climb toward 115°F.
As August begins, San Diego County has temporarily closed several parks to help protect visitors from dangerous summer temperatures—a reminder that extreme heat is a serious safety concern throughout the region, including here in Borrego Springs.
The County has announced that El Capitan Preserve (near Lakeside), Hellhole Canyon Preserve (Valley Center), and Mt. Gower Preserve (Ramona) will remain closed throughout August as an annual safety precaution during the hottest part of the year.
Meanwhile, Agua Caliente County Park and Vallecito County Park, both in or near the Anza-Borrego Desert, remain closed for the summer after closing over Memorial Day weekend. They are scheduled to reopen Labor Day weekend.
The closures come as temperatures across the desert continue to soar. In Borrego Springs, highs are now reaching 115°F, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Stay Safe in Extreme Heat
If you must be outside:
- Avoid hiking or strenuous activity during the day.
- Drink water frequently—even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Wear light-colored clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen.
- Never leave children or pets in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.
- Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
Even experienced hikers can quickly become overwhelmed in extreme desert heat. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop rapidly when temperatures exceed 110°F.

For Borrego Springs residents, this is also a good reminder to keep outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours whenever possible and to make use of air-conditioned public spaces if needed.
As summer continues, the safest adventure may simply be waiting for cooler weather. The desert will still be here in the fall—but staying healthy now ensures you'll be able to enjoy it then.
