From Norway to Spain: Sylvia Maas Rides for Borrego Springs Students
On June 20, 2026, the NorthCape–Tarifa race will begin at 12:01 a.m. at the North Cape in Norway. Described as the world's longest bicycle race, the event follows a route of nearly 7,000 kilometers to Tarifa, Spain, the southernmost
point of mainland Europe.
Among the riders will be Borrego Springs ultra cyclist Sylvia Maas, who will be riding for her Bike4BorregoKids initiative.
The race begins at the North Cape in Norway and ends in Tarifa, Spain. Along the way, riders pass through several major checkpoints, including:
- Helsinki, Finland
- Hill of Crosses, Lithuania
- Torun, Poland
- Bregenz, Austria
- Col du Galibier, France
- Nice, France
- Port d’Envalira, Andorra
- Pico del Veleta, Spain
- Tarifa, Spain
The route covers nearly 7,000 kilometers and includes mountain passes, historic cities, and some of the most demanding cycling terrain in Europe.
More Than a Ride: Investing in Borrego Springs Students

Bike4BorregoKids awarded $30,000 in scholarships to Borrego Springs High School graduating seniors in 2025, including fourteen $1,500 scholarships and a $5,000 Female Scholar/Athlete Award.
Maas is using the ride to bring attention to Bike4BorregoKids, a community initiative that supports Borrego Springs students through scholarships, mentorship, leadership development, and educational opportunities.
The program helps students prepare for college and careers by providing assistance with scholarship applications, academic guidance, and opportunities to participate in service projects and leadership activities. Bike4BorregoKids also helps create educational and cultural experiences that allow students to explore opportunities beyond Borrego Springs.
The initiative has had a growing impact on local students. In 2025, Bike4BorregoKids awarded $30,000 in scholarships to graduating Borrego Springs High School seniors. Fourteen students received $1,500 scholarships, and an additional $5,000 Female Scholar/Athlete Award was presented through the program.

– Sylvia Maas, speaking to the Class of 2025
“With riding, we use the term DNF—‘Did Not Finish.’ I fight hard not to DNF. And for you, in school and in life, it’s the same. You’ve started something important, and the goal is to finish. That takes self-determination. It takes drive. I have this crazy drive to keep pedaling no matter what—and you’ll need that same kind of energy when things get tough. There will be bumps in the road. That’s normal. Just don’t stop. Keep going.”
