Elaine's Adventurous Spirit: From City Life to Wilderness
Elaine Che, a Los Angeles native, embarked on a captivating journey across the San Diego Trans County Trail (SDTCT), a 150-mile trek stretching from the Salton Sea to Torrey Pines State Beach Park. This blog post delves into her extraordinary experiences, particularly through the mesmerizing Anza-Borrego State Park.
The San Diego Trans County Trail is also known to some as the “Sea-to-Sea” Trail since it runs from the Salton Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
Setting Off: The Start of a Remarkable Adventure
Elaine's journey began at the eastern terminus of the SDTCT near the Salton Sea. As she set off on her adventure, she faced the arid and rugged landscapes that would lead her to the lush coastal scenes of Torrey Pines. This transition from desert to ocean encapsulated the diverse beauty of Southern California.
Anza-Borrego: A Desert Oasis
As Elaine traversed through Anza-Borrego State Park, she encountered its unique desert environment. "The sunsets never cease to amaze me in the desert," she shared, highlighting the park's stunning natural beauty. Her journey through Anza-Borrego was not just a physical trek but a spiritual exploration, deeply influenced by her meditation background.
Borrego Springs: A Tale of Hospitality
After a long day of trekking, Elaine arrived in the town of Borrego Springs as the sun was setting. Hungry and uncertain, she sought out a local spot for a burrito, unsure of where she would rest for the night. Her apprehension as a solo woman traveler was palpable, feeling the curious gazes of locals upon her.
Trail Magic in the Desert Town
In a twist of fate, a man named Michael approached Elaine, inquiring if she was a thru-hiker. This encounter led to an act of kindness, as Michael offered her a ride to a nearby trailhead and assisted with her resupply. Elaine’s experience of trail magic in Borrego Springs was a heartwarming reminder of the unexpected generosity she found on her journey.
An Unconventional Campsite: Finding Shelter
That night, Elaine found an unconventional yet welcoming place to sleep - a warm and odor-free pit toilet. This experience underlined the adaptability and resilience required for thru-hiking, turning a potentially uncomfortable situation into a positive and memorable one.

Challenges Along the Way: Water Scarcity and Navigation
One of the significant challenges Elaine faced was managing water scarcity. In her words, "I still had to be comfortable with hiking 20+ miles with a few liters of water on my back." Her strategic planning and adaptability were crucial in navigating through the parched regions of Anza-Borrego.
Trail Magic and Local Encounters
Throughout her hike, Elaine experienced moments of trail magic and interactions with local communities, especially in Borrego Springs. These encounters added a layer of warmth and human connection to her solitary journey, contrasting with the solitude of the trails.
