The story of the Galleta Meadows Estate began in the early 2000s, when Avery purchased thousands of acres of land in the area.

Dennis Avery, a philanthropist and businessman, left an indelible mark on the town of Borrego Springs, California, where he was adored for his generosity and deep appreciation for the area. One of his enduring contributions was the creation of the Galleta Meadows Estate, a cherished attraction for both locals and visitors.

Galleta Meadows Estate: A Desert Oasis of Art

The Galleta Meadows Estate features a captivating collection of large metal sculptures scattered throughout the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Meticulously crafted by artist Ricardo Breceda, these sculptures depict many creatures, from prehistoric giants like dinosaurs and mammoths to more contemporary animals like horses and camels.

Each sculpture is a testament to Breceda’s intricate craftsmanship, with many towering over visitors as they explore the desert landscape.

The Beginnings of Galleta Meadows

Dennis Avery’s connection to the Galleta Meadows Estate began in the early 2000s when he acquired thousands of acres of land there. Driven by his love for the desert and a desire to share its beauty, Avery commissioned Breceda to bring the landscape to life with these magnificent sculptures. Over time, these sculptures have become a beloved attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at the desert’s beauty and the artistry of the sculptures.

A Legacy of Quiet Generosity

Dennis Avery passed away in 2012 at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy of generosity that extended far beyond Borrego Springs. Avery’s philanthropic efforts touched countless lives, from supporting local causes like the football team, a skatepark, and adorning the main street with Ocotillo plants, to global initiatives such as AIDS clinics in China, a library in Honduras, and a drug rehabilitation center in Hong Kong. He put numerous individuals through college and always extended kindness and respect to everyone he met, regardless of their background.

A Humble Tribute
