A Guide to a Safe and Enjoyable Visit
Located in California, Anza-Borrego State Park is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. With its diverse landscapes, including desert, mountains, and canyons, the park offers endless opportunities for adventure and exploration.
However, to ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, the park has implemented several regulations that all visitors must follow.
We will cover the park regulations for developed campgrounds and primitive/backcountry camping and day use.
Developed Campgrounds
- Check-out time is at 12:00 noon.
- The speed limit in the campground is 15 MPH and all park vehicles must have all tires on the pavement.
- Pets must not be left unattended and must be on a leash no longer than six feet during the day. At nighttime, dogs and cats must be in a tent or vehicle. Dogs are not allowed on dirt hiking trails.
- Engine-driven electric generators may only be operated between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. and loud, disturbing noise is prohibited at all times.
- Gathering or taking of any live, dead, or downed vegetation is prohibited.
- Bicycles, skateboards, etc. must remain on paved roads and riders under 18 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet.
Primitive/Backcountry Camping and Day Use
- The California Vehicle Code applies to all roads in the park, including dirt, sandy wash, or paved roads. Vehicles must be parked no more than one vehicle length off the road and must not trample vegetation or drive over geological features.
- Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash and are only allowed on park roads. Dogs are not allowed on trails or in wilderness areas.
- Camp at least 100 feet away from all water sources (springs, creeks, streams).
- Ground fires are not permitted and a metal container must be used for all campfires. Firewood must be brought from outside the park.
- Firearms and fireworks are not allowed in the park.
- There is no garbage collection in the backcountry, so visitors must pack out all their garbage, including toilet paper and human waste. The park asks visitors to practice “Leave No Trace.”
- All natural and cultural features are protected, and nothing may be removed or disturbed. Visitors are encouraged to leave only footprints and take only memories.
